The Sutra of the Lotus is the main text of a Buddhist Schools including philosophy
and thoughts of Tiantai Buddhism. The Sutra of the Lotus that shows the contents
to realize among a lot of teachings of Buddha became the basis of faith and asceticism
as well as thoughts and philosophy of Tiantai Buddhism. The Sutra of the Lotus reveals
contents and thoughts of Buddhist scriptures in the title. The Sutra of the Lotus can
directly be translated into 'teachings of a white and right lotus'. The meanings shown in
the Sutra of the Lotus can be found through the title of the scriptures.
The Sutra of the Lotus is based on the logic of HoiSamGquiIl (會三歸一) that three monks
(三乘) of Shravaka, Pratyeka-buddha, and Abbreviation of Bodhisattva are one of Single
Buddha-vehicle (一佛乘). The teachings of Single Buddha-vehicle is the best doctrine. It
symbolizes its greatness by comparing it to a white beautiful and outstanding lotus. Because
the lotus buds in mud but it is not stained with it, it is compared to a flower of enlightenment
like this even in the filthy world filled with 5 dirty things. The Sutra of the Lotus consists
of 28 items. 14 items of the first part is called the first part (迹門) and 14 items of the
second part is done the body (本門). The first part means that Sakyamuni Buddha left his trace
as he came to this world to save people. The body explains that Buddha actually attained
Buddhahood very long time ago and his life is infinite. In other words, Dharmakāya-Buddha,
the existence that always stays having no beginning and no end and does not die preaches
Buddhism by emerging as 응신불 to save people. Therefore, the first part represents Sakyamuni
Buddha and the body does Buddha of the fundamental truth that stays forever attaining
Buddhahood long time ago.
Priest Tiantai Zhiyi divided the period of the teachings of Buddha into total 5 parts and created the system
to judge the scriptures preached in each period. This is called Five Periods and the Various Divisions of
Teaching or doctrine (五時敎判). The contents of the Sutra of the Lotus is called the perfect, unsurpassed,
or comprehensive teaching(圓敎) as Buddha's complete enlightenment is all shown in Teachings of the illustrious
Dharma and virtues of Nirvana (法華涅槃時) of the last period among them. Wongyo means the smooth and complete teachings.
The Sutra of
the Lotus has been subject to be faith of many people long time ago. It's because the contents are simpler
than other scriptures, there are a lot of metaphors, and the acts of charity that people believe in, have,
write, and recite the Sutra of the Lotus are infinite. They say people's acts of charity are mysterious when
they have and recite the Sutra of the Lotus even though they are guilty. And 「Guan shi yin pu sa pu men pin」,
the 25th item, presents Chan Buddha-smrti, the ascetic method that has continued the long tradition of Tiantai
Buddhism as it preaches that people can overcome all kinds of difficulties with power of prestige of
Avalokitesvara Guan Yin.
